Somalia Announces July 5 Banadir District Council Speaker Elections

MOGADISHU, Somalia(SONNA_Somalia's Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation has announced that elections for the Speakers and leadership of District Councils across Banadir Region will be held on July 5, 2026.

In a statement, the Ministry called on political organizations and council members elected during Mogadishu's local council elections in December 2025 to prepare for the vote. The Ministry said the date was set after considering the ongoing Freedom Week celebrations.

The elections represent the next phase of the local governance process following the district council elections conducted under the one-person, one-vote system in Banadir Region. Similar local council leadership elections have already taken place in districts of Southwest State.

The vote is expected to complete the formation of district council leadership structures across Benadir Region.
